Tips on flying the friendly sky

I have to say working for a low-cost carrier for more than four years, I have gained some priceless experience! I am here to share some of the knowledge I have and hope that would enhance your next flying experience.
If you are flying somewhere to get on a cruise, it is best to get there a day ahead of the schedule. Why? So often that flights are canceled and delays, you certainly do not want to miss the cruise because of that. When a flight is canceled or delay, you might think that you would be compensated with a free flight. Not true either! It all depends on why there was a delay. If it was the weather, you are out of luck. No one can predict the weather. If it is a mechanical delay, it depends on how long and there is a time limit to get you on the next flight.
Next, be sure to check in online to get your boarding passes within twenty-four hours of the flight. That way, at least you would get some decent seats. It is no guarantee that you would get those seats but more likely that you will. As far as the luggage goes, the best is having a carry on. That way, it will follow you. If you have to check bags, I suggest that you have all the important things in your carry on in case your luggage is lost. You should always have your glasses and medicines with you. Also, if you chose to check luggage, check you bag tag. Make sure that it is checked to your final destination, especially if you have a connecting flight. If you have to travel with more than one airline, check the airline’s interline (within or between different airlines) agreement. If you travel international, there is a chance that the multi carriers do not have agreements. Ask the ticket agent to read the bag tag final destination to you if you don’t know the airport codes. They can be similar and there is room for human errors.
Now that I scared you enough, do you still want to listen to the rest of my advice? Okay, it is the big day for the airport, be there at least two and a half hours early. Yes, you heard me right. You can check your bags within four hours of your flights due to security reason. Going through security can be time consuming. There can be a long line especially at the bigger airports. Be at the gate ( the boarding area after you wnt through security) at least half an hour before boarding. That way, if the flight is oversold and you are not there, they cannot give your seat away. Trust me, it is all in writing if you read the fine prints.
Oh, if you are running late and got to the gate as the agent pulled the jetway ( the tunnel which connects the gate area and the airplane) away from the plane, don’t expect the agent to pull back the jetway and let you board. It is Federal Regulation that once the jetway is pulled and the door is closed, it cannot be reopened unless there is a mechanical problem or medical emergency.
Now that you are prepared for your flight, enjoy flying in the friendly sky!

I see that you too are up early like me. Since I am in the airline industry, I just had to read your article.

Nice article; however, I think that you need to define some of the jargonistic terms that we--and I mean "we" since I, too, work for an airline--such as "jetway", "interline", and "gate" that many people outside the airline industry might not understand off the cuff. Notwithstanding that, the advice that you offered in your article is definitely helpful if travelers would take the time to read it. Again, nice article.
